UnionPay Inks e-Commerce Deal for U.S., Canada (March 19, 2013)
March 19, 2013
International payment processor Planet Payment Inc. has joined with China UnionPay to enable UnionPay card users to shop online at e-commerce merchants based in the U.S. and Canada. The deal grants such retailers access to one of the largest card brands in the world, while continuing UnionPay’s recent efforts to expand acceptance of its cards at online merchants around the world.
Under the pact, online merchants can accept UnionPay cards via UPOP, UnionPay’s online transaction authentication and processing program, which will be integrated into Planet Payment’s own iPay payments gateway. UPOP also will be available as a standalone solution from Planet Payment for merchants that aren’t clients of the processor. The first e-commerce merchant to launch Planet Payment’s UPOP solution is International Checkout, a third-party payment and fulfillment service for more than 1,500 U.S. retailers and brands selling globally online.
Shanghai-based UnionPay in December signed a deal with Discover to enable UnionPay cardholders to shop online at merchants that accept Discover. That agreement built upon a reciprocal acceptance pact the companies inked in 2005.
