A new mobile app from Heartland School Solutions, a division of Princeton, N.J.-based merchant processor Heartland Payment Systems, aims to make it easier for parents to manage their children’s school related expenses, such as meals, tuition, lab fees and sporting events.
The app, launched this week for Apple iOS and Android smartphones and tablets, supports Heartland’s mySchoolBucks program, a payment and information portal for parents used by more than 2,000 K-12 school districts across the U.S.
Parents can use the app to access their students’ meal accounts and prepay school-related fees, add funds to their students’ account using credit and debit cards or electronic checks. In addition, they can view current account balances and student meal purchases, as well as arrange recurring payments when their account reaches a low balance threshold.
Not only is the mySchoolBucks program and accompanying app designed to help parents, but also school districts. “mySchoolBucks solution reduces cash and check handling while tightening cash controls, allowing schools to reduce administrative costs and risks associated with students carrying cash and checks to school,” said Michael A. Lawler, president, strategic markets group, Heartland Payment Systems.
Last June, Heartland launched a mobile app for a similar program, MyLunchMoney, which enables parents to manage their kids’ lunch expenses via smartphone or tablet.
