Skrill Hopes to Win Big with Online Gaming in New Jersey (Nov. 26, 2013)
With online gaming legal in New Jersey as of early this week, digital payments provider Skrill is anteing up to offer the only mobile wallet fully approved by the state’s Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE), the company said. Operator of one of the world’s largest online gaming wallets, Europe-based Skrill does business in the U.S. as Skrill USA Inc., a registered money service business (MSB) and licensed money transmitter in several states, including New Jersey.
The approval from New Jersey’s DGE means Skrill can offer its services to gaming operators in the state, which can use the company’s 1-Tap digital wallet platform to offer customers deposits and withdrawals into gaming accounts without having to repeatedly enter personal details or financial information. The company’s paysafecard division—acquired by Skrill early this year—has also earned DGE approval.
The launch of state-sanctioned online gaming in New Jersey could represent a possible jackpot for payment providers. The state has authorized six Atlantic City casinos to operate gaming Websites that offer a full range of games, with geo-location software used to verify that players are located within the state while playing. New Jersey joins Delaware and Nevada in offering sanctioned online gaming—though Nevada allows only poker. With a population of 9 million and heavily trafficked borders, New Jersey could serve as a litmus test for the possible success of online gaming in other states throughout the country, according to many observers.
