ExxonMobil, Rite Aid Join MCX as 50-Plus Merchants Sign On (Dec. 9, 2013)
The retailer-led mobile payment consortium Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX) today announced ExxonMobil has joined its ranks, along with Rite Aid Corp., supermarket chain Giant Eagle and the convenience store chain Kum & Go. With its recent spate of additions, MCX says it has more than 50 participating merchants, representing more than 100,000 U.S. retail locations and an excess of $1 trillion in payments annually, MCX said.
Though Coppell, Texas-based MCX, founded in 2012, has yet to announce its consumer-facing brand name or the date when it plans to go live, the organization has said it plans to offer a mobile wallet enabling consumers to use smartphones to pay at the POS at participating retailers. FIS will provide the payments processing platform and Gemalto is developing its mobile wallet software.
Originally launching with major merchant backers, including Walmart and Target, MCX in recent months has seen its momentum increase as diverse types of merchants, including large and small retailers with local and national reach, sign on, MCX CEO Dekkers Davidson said in an announcement.
