American Express Goes Mobile in Uber Deal (June 10, 2014)
Uber, the global service that connects drivers with riders, has integrated American Express’ membership reward points into its iOS app, giving consumers another way to use their mobile devices to pay with American Express. The program enables U.S. cardholders enrolled in the membership rewards program to place on file their American Express card with Uber to either earn double rewards points when paying for the Uber service, or use their points to pay for Uber rides.
Using the Uber app, cardholders will see an option to “Earn 2x Points” or “Use Points” for their rides. Cardholder then receive on their phones an on-screen ride summary and email receipt from Uber showing that double reward points were earned or that points were redeemed. If the points balance is not enough to use for the ride, the American Express card will be charged the full fare and the cardholder will earn double reward points for the transaction.
The Uber news follows last week’s announcement from American Express of new financial management tools for American Express Serve and Bluebird GPR prepaid cards, enabling cardholders to better track spending, create budgets, set spending alerts and track financial goals, among other features.
