Boku Acquires Rival mopay (Oct. 7, 2014)
Carrier billing specialist Boku Inc. has acquired one of its largest competitors, Germany-based mopay. The acquisition, terms of which were not disclosed, adds hundreds of merchants to Boku’s global merchant base that includes Facebook, Sony, Spotify and Electronic Arts. The combined assets of the two companies will offer greater scale and operational efficiency, according to Boku, which now will offer mobile payments in more than 80 countries, with a reach of nearly 5 billion consumers. While no timeline has been set, the companies will merge operations under the Boku brand. Boku’s acquisition follows a partnership with mobile network operators O2, EE and Vodafone, enabling mobile phone customers in the U.K. to charge the purchase of physical goods and services to their phone bills.
