Apple Making it Easier for PayPal, Google Wallet Users (Dec. 16, 2014)
Apple in recent weeks has become somewhat more accommodating to consumers who use PayPal or Google Wallet. For example, consumers in the U.S. and U.K. now may use PayPal when making purchases on Apple’s online store. The PayPal option doesn’t appear on the Apple Store mobile iOS app.
“PayPal has a good product that serves the needs of many online merchants, and Apple clearly sees that value,” Rick Oglesby, a senior analyst with Double Diamond Group, tells Paybefore. “It’s a good, large merchant win for PayPal, and Apple customers will have a convenient and secure way to buy Apple products—that’s good for Apple and for Apple’s consumer base.”
In related news, Google has updated its Google Wallet app for iOS, which includes a few new features, including being able to unlock the wallet app using iPhone 6’s Touch ID fingerprint-based security technology and eliminating the need to enter a PIN to login, according to reports. Users also will be able to see their loyalty and gift cards, and divvy up the check at restaurants with a “split the bill” feature. Apple, however, hasn’t opened up NFC support for Google Wallet.
