Bitcoin Transactions Notch $296 Million over Holiday Weekend (Dec. 10, 2014)
During the feverish shopping on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, even bitcoin had its mad moment.
Bitcoin sales accounted for a total of $296 million spent globally on the day after Thanksgiving and the following Monday, typically strong shopping days, according to Bitnet, a digital commerce platform with offices in San Francisco and Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Approximately 1,200 merchants promoted Black Friday bitcoin deals at BitcoinBlackFriday.com, including Gyft, Newegg, Fangamer and BitcoinBowlPackages.com. Overstock.com, along with several other bitcoin-accepting merchants, opted to list bitcoin Black Friday deals only on their own Websites.
Bitnet estimates bitcoin’s share of holiday weekend sales would put it ninth among payment networks worldwide in the biggest shopping weekend of the year, with Black Friday driving $152 million in bitcoin purchases and Cyber Monday accounting for the remaining $144 million.
