Pay.gov Integrates PayPal, Dwolla with U.S. Gov’t Payments Portal (Feb. 19, 2015)
Pay.gov, the U.S. government’s online payments portal for 90 federal agencies, is expanding to embrace digital wallets, including PayPal and Dwolla, the U.S. Treasury announced this week. Nearly 98 percent of the $3.7 trillion payments the government received last year were collected electronically, accounting for 400 million transactions. To further expand collection channels, Treasury has been piloting acceptance through PayPal and Dwolla “to provide greater choice and convenience” to customers, David A. Lebryk, fiscal assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, wrote in a Feb. 18 blog post.
Lebryk separately noted that the government also is looking to explore the use of encryption and tokenization to provide further security for federal payments via credit and debit cards. “While these features are not yet available for federal transactions, Treasury looks forward to working with providers to evaluate how these new technologies can be used with government benefits cards and terminals,” Lebryk wrote.
