PayPal and Shell Enable Payment at the Pump Via Smartphone (Feb. 10, 2015)
PayPal and Shell are partnering to enable motorists in the U.K. to pay for gasoline at the pump via a smartphone app. The service, which Shell has been testing, enables consumers to initiate a payment at 1,000 U.K. Shell petrol stations by opening Shell’s mobile app or PayPal’s app and selecting a station and pump. The transaction is processed without swiping a card at the fuel dispenser, increasing customer convenience, the companies said. Receipts are delivered to the app. Shell will roll out the service first in April to users of its Shell Motorist App, then expand it nationwide later this year.
Last month, fuel chain Chevron tweeted it is working on adding Apple Pay acceptance at gas pumps at its U.S. stations. The company already accepts Apple Pay at many of its Extra Mile and Texaco convenience stores.
