Discover Adds ‘On/Off’ Switch to its Cards (April 16, 2015)
Discover cardholders who have temporarily misplaced their consumer credit cards or suspect fraudulent activity on their accounts now can shut off their cards with Discover’s Freeze It security feature. Freeze It serves as an on/off switch, enabling cardholders to freeze their accounts by touching a button from their smart device, Web browser or by calling 1-800-DISCOVER. The account can be turned back on the same way. The feature does not apply to Discover business prepaid cards, according to the company.
The feature sends alerts to cardholders if a transaction is declined while their accounts are frozen. Also, Freeze It allows some account activity to continue, such as returns, rewards redemptions and bills marked as recurring by merchants.
Freeze It joins a variety of security features for cardholders, including continuous monitoring of Discover card purchases, chip technology making it difficult to counterfeit a Discover card, available email and text alerts when purchases are made over a threshold determined by the cardholder, and a $0 fraud liability guarantee.
