Discover Joins Apple Pay Fold (April 27, 2015)
Discover credit and debit cardholders will be able to make payments via Apple Pay beginning this fall, the companies announced today. “As the mobile payments landscape matures, Discover remains committed to giving cardmembers secure options for using their cards and mobile devices,” said Diane Offereins, president of payment services, Discover. “Discover’s focus on simplicity and value for our cardmembers aligns well with the way Apple Pay makes purchases easy and convenient.” Discover credit cardmembers paying via Apple Pay also have access to current benefits, including the network’s Cashback Bonus program and the new Freeze It security tool.
With Discover in the fold, Apple Pay now supports all four major U.S. payment networks. Since launching in October, Apple Pay has steadily added financial services and retail partners, increasing the platform’s reach with every new alliance. As of February, more than 750 payment card issuers were committed to Apple Pay integration, and retail acceptance was set to double from the service’s 200,000 original merchant acceptance locations. With its U.S. presence solidified, Apple Pay is setting its sights on international growth. Last week Paybefore reported that Apple Inc. is negotiating to bring Apple Pay to Canada as early as November. China and the U.K. also are likely sites for future Apple Pay expansion, according to industry observers.
