First Payroll, Now GPR: Brink’s and NetSpend Announce Rollout (April 7, 2015)
The Brink’s Co., a brand known for security and armored cash transport, is expanding its financial services product suite with a new GPR card. Richmond, Va.-based Brink’s this week announced the launch of a reloadable prepaid card, in partnership with NetSpend and MasterCard, building on the success of its Paybefore Award-winning payroll card the partners rolled out in 2013. The launch of the GPR card, issued by San Diego-based BofI Federal Bank, follows a successful nine-month pilot, the company said.
Brink’s Global Payments unit developed the program to meet the needs of unbanked families, while emphasizing trust and convenience, according to the company. Features include speedy availability of direct deposits, free online money transfers to other Brink’s GPR cardholders, online support, smartphone apps and the option to use a virtual card for online shopping. The card, which has no purchase price, includes three fee plan options, including pay-as-you-go, monthly and preferred. The card also offers NetSpend’s Payback Rewards with the option to earn cash back on purchases. Brink’s initially is using the online channel to promote the card. “During the pilot we’ve seen strong demand, confirming the value of our product as well as our brand equity in the consumer space,” said Brink’s CEO Tom Schievelbein.
