PayPal Brings One-Click Shopping Service to Web (April 29, 2015)
Less than a year after debuting its One Touch payment service on mobile devices, PayPal Inc. is bringing the feature to the Web. Beginning rollout this week, One Touch for Web enables online shoppers to make purchases by logging in to One Touch using their PayPal usernames and passwords. Subsequent purchases can be made at multiple e-merchants until the user logs out of the service. Most U.S. PayPal merchants automatically will have One Touch enabled on their Websites, with international expansion planned in the coming months, PayPal said in a blog post.
The mobile version of One Touch began rolling out last August. The solution was built using the technology platform of Braintree, the e-commerce processor PayPal acquired in 2013. Merchants including Airbnb, Lyft and StubHub began offering the service; StubHub reported a double-digit increase in total sales volume through PayPal on iOS since enabling One Touch, according to PayPal.
Online and mobile payments providers have increasingly turned to one-click checkout as a way to prevent shopping cart abandonment, which remains one of the biggest challenges in e-commerce. Last summer, Visa unveiled a one-click purchase button for Websites and apps. Other one-click services aimed at streamlining the online checkout process include MasterCard’s MasterPass and Amazon’s Pay with Amazon.
One-click mobile purchasing also has useful applications for in-store shopping as well. Tillster Inc., a provider of digital ordering and engagement for the restaurant industry, is integrating PayPal as a funding option across Tillster’s mobile offerings. The deal will enable PayPal customers to pay for food orders using their PayPal accounts with one click at thousands of quick service restaurants in the U.S., beginning later this year.
