Samsung’s Biometrics Plans Go beyond Samsung Pay (April 21, 2015)
Samsung has even larger plans for biometrics beyond including fingerprint-based authentication as part of its Samsung Pay mobile payments service. The South Korea-based handset maker’s biometrics authentication technology has received certification from the Fast IDentity Online (FIDO) Alliance, an international body that sets standards for online authentication. “Going forward, we plan to not only target hardware manufacturers that make smartphones, but to also provide our biometrics solutions to online services and security companies,” a company spokesperson told ZD Net. Those solutions include fingerprint, iris and voice-recognition technology, the spokesperson added.
Biometrics authentication reached a milestone last year, when Samsung rival Apple Inc. unveiled its Apple Pay service, which uses the iPhone’s TouchID fingerprint sensor to validate users. By bringing biometrics security to the masses, observers suggested, Apple Pay could significantly ramp up market penetration for the technology. Earlier this month, American Express said it’s testing technology that uses facial recognition to authenticate mobile transactions.
