Dunkin’ Donuts Boosts Mobile App with Visa Checkout in Coffee Giants’ M-Payments Race (June 22, 2015)
Coffee kings Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks are racing to see who can get consumers their caffeine fix fastest by streamlining mobile ordering and payments in their respective apps. Dunkin’ recently integrated Visa Checkout on its Website and within its mobile app, introducing a quicker method for customers to reload funds to the virtual Dunkin’ Donuts Card, which is the in-app payment method. Previously consumers using the Dunkin’ Donuts Mobile App were required to add each funding source separately, manually filling in card details, including address, expiration date and three-digit security code. Dunkin’ sweetened the deal with a $10 bonus for new or existing Dunkin’ customers using Visa Checkout to load funds to the app.
“You can now literally have a cup of Dunkin’ coffee in one hand and pay for it using Visa Checkout with the other,” said Sam Shrauger, Visa senior vice president of digital solutions. Visa introduced Visa Checkout nearly a year ago.
Dunkin’ Donuts also is working on an order-ahead service and is considering adding a delivery service that could integrate with a mobile order-ahead platform currently in development, Dunkin’ Brands CEO Nigel Travis told CNBC earlier this month. The company hasn’t provided further details on those plans. Starbucks Corp. this year has been testing direct-to-desk delivery in some office buildings in New York.
Starbucks also last week announced plans to expand its Mobile Order & Pay service nationwide, which it began testing in December 2014. The service, available now only for iPhone users, is popular with commuters eager to cut time by placing orders and paying ahead. Mobile Order & Pay is available in 4,000 Starbucks stores and will be expanded to all 12,000 U.S. Starbucks stores by yearend, as well as to Android devices, the company said.
