Amex Extends Apple Pay to U.S. Corporate Cards (Aug. 11, 2015)
American Express Co. this week expanded its Apple Pay connection to include corporate cards, becoming the first major corporate card portfolio to integrate with the m-payments service, the New York-based company said.
American Express cardholders may add the cards to compatible devices to pay at contactless-enabled payment locations in stores or within apps, simplifying business travel, said Greg Keeley, American Express executive vice president, global corporate payments. The announcement encompasses cards issued by companies to employees, including purchasing cards, and travel and entertainment cards, according to the network.
The move could mean a tidal wave of volume for Apple Pay, which has struggled to maintain momentum after signing up more than a million users in the first 72 hours post-launch. Recent primary consumer research from First Annapolis suggests only one in five iPhone 6 users actually has made a purchase with Apple Pay. The finding—based on a survey of 1,434 smartphone users conducted in the first half of 2015—suggests that, while there is much excitement surrounding mobile payments, actual consumer adoption and usage still has a long way to go.
