CurrentC Pilot Adds Walmart (Oct. 19, 2015)
Walmart is the latest merchant to join a pilot of MCX’s CurrentC mobile payments wallet underway in Columbus, Ohio, and Exxon Mobil Corp. and Shell gas stations will come aboard soon, according to the mobile payments consortium. CurrentC last week announced it’s added technology from New York-based Buy It Mobility Networks Inc. (BIM) to enable ACH payments from consumers’ checking accounts. Consumers also may use Target Corp.’s REDcard brand credit and debit cards to pay at Target stores, and MCX also eventually plans to support general purpose credit and debit cards, the group confirms. MCX began its CurrentC pilot Sept. 15. Consumers in Columbus can pay using CurrentC at 150 locations that include outlets of CVS/pharmacy, Target, Sears, Kmart, Wendy’s and Giant Eagle.
MCX, founded in 2012 as a consortium of merchants including Walmart, Target and Best Buy that now includes 70 merchants, says CurrentC will work with any iOS or Android mobile device to pay for items at the POS using QR code technology. Consumers also may use CurrentC to redeem coupons, promotions and rewards during transactions. With BIM’s technology, most U.S. consumers with a bank account can complete the enrollment process to authenticate their accounts with CurrentC within 60 seconds, according to MCX. An MCX spokesperson tells Paybefore the company is not ready to announce a national rollout date but it’s “making great progress” and is pleased with the Columbus test so far.
