EMV: Third Time’s a Charm?
By Loraine DeBonis, Editor-In-Chief
I recently received my EMV debit card from a top 5 U.S. issuer. I first tried the card over the weekend at a major retailer that has long had its EMV terminals activated. I inserted the card, but when I hit the button for no cash back, I received an error message and was prompted to swipe. Today, I tried the card again at a different retailer—a large drugstore chain. I inserted the card and was prompted to swipe, even though the cashier knew my chip card and the terminal were “supposed to work today.” Maybe my third time will be a charm. So far my chip card has succeeded only in making my checkout process longer. I’ll keep trying, of course, but I’d love to hear about your experiences with EMV at the POS.
