Amazon Adds ‘Pay with Amazon’ for Mobile Apps (Nov. 2, 2015)
The “Pay with Amazon” button the e-commerce giant introduced a few years ago is coming to mobile apps for smartphones and tablets. Amazon recently made its one-click Pay with Amazon button available to third-party mobile apps, capitalizing on the growing popularity of buy buttons for mobile commerce, according to a report in Re/code. The move means Amazon’s customers can make in-app purchases by clicking the Pay with Amazon button on participating Websites, and logging in with Amazon to confirm payment credentials already on file. Amazon has 200 million customer accounts on file, but previously the feature wasn’t optimized for mobile. Amazon also is extending its general Pay with Amazon feature for e-commerce Websites in Japan, according to the report.
Buy buttons enabling streamlined checkout for online shopping and mobile commerce are expanding, with support from major payments brands. PayPal was a pioneer in embedding its logo as a checkout button on e-commerce sites; Visa last year began promoting its streamlined Visa Checkout experience and MasterCard is driving toward the same goal with MasterPass. Observers note it’s taking time for Amazon to build traction with Pay with Amazon, perhaps because some e-commerce merchants are wary of sharing customer shopping data with Amazon. One of Amazon’s partners for its new one-click, in-app payment feature is GolfNow, a service for booking golf course tee times.
