EMV Migration Forum Adds Resources, New Committee for Chip Card Transition at Gas Pumps (Nov. 4, 2015)
The EMV Migration Forum, a cross-industry organization that supports the U.S. shift to EMV chip cards, today announced a package of fresh educational resources and a new working committee to guide the chip card transition for merchants with automated fuel dispensers. The petroleum industry faces a liability shift in October 2017, two years after the general merchant liability shift went into effect last month.
The forum said it’s established the Petroleum Working Committee to identify, review and resolve challenges surrounding the shift to EMV chip cards at gas pumps, which are mostly unattended and require special equipment and processes compared with general POS terminals. The committee’s primary goal is to streamline the EMV testing and certification for payment terminals at gas pumps, the organization said. Committee participants include petroleum and convenience store merchants, gasoline marketers and vendors of POS and fuel dispensing equipment.
Today the forum also released several new educational and information resources for consumers and industry. These include a explaining what a chip card is and how to use them at stores and ATMs; the organization is urging industry participants to share the video internally and with customers, through social media and other channels. The forum also released a Web presentation for merchants, issuers, acquirers and ATM owners, covering cardholder verification requirements and considerations for the consumer experience. A new white paper for merchants also is available with information on how businesses can best manage tips and gratuities, particularly targeting companies in the restaurant, travel and entertainment sectors.
