NRF BIG Show: Diebold Brings NFC to Self-Checkout (Jan. 19, 2016)
With mobile devices projected to play an increasing role in in-store shopping, ATM maker Diebold Inc. has unveiled a new self-checkout concept that enables users to make purchases by scanning items via mobile. Debuted at this week’s National Retail Federation BIG Show in New York, the concept—which is as yet unnamed—builds on the company’s expertise in providing ATMs, with the added convenience of payment via NFC and mobile wallet. While shopping, a customer uses his mobile device to scan any items he wants to purchase. Once he’s ready to pay, he taps the phone onto the self-checkout unit, with payment made via card information preloaded onto his mobile wallet or the retailer’s app. The terminal also accepts cash payments and can dispense cash for cashback transactions.
Diebold is no stranger to NFC. The North Canton, Ohio-based company began incorporating NFC acceptance technology into its ATMs more than two years ago. However, the new concept is Diebold’s first foray into contactless self-checkout—an area the company sees as ripe for improvement via mobile and NFC. Combining those technologies with self-checkout will benefit retailers by speeding up traditional checkout lines and increasing consumer engagement by leveraging digital gift cards, membership rewards programs and mobile marketing campaigns, according to Diebold.
Diebold got significantly larger in November, when it announced plans to acquire Germany’s Wincor Nixdorf for $1.8 billion, in a deal that will create the largest global ATM supplier.
