Kentucky Police Bust Gift Card Fraud Scam
Police in Louisville, Ky., have arrested nine people for allegedly running a fraud ring centered around gift cards.
Members of the ring, which included Esparanza and Derek Sines, allegedly stole goods from retailers, returned the merchandise for gift cards, then sold those cards for cash, police say. The ring allegedly gained more than $100,000 from the scam.
Police busted the ring earlier this month and say the ring operated between November 2013 and October 2015. Police would not confirm a report from a local TV news station that the ring operated in support of members’ heroin habits.
The retailers targeted include chains such as The Home Depot, Lowe’s, Target, Meijer and Macy’s, police say.
