Visa Encourages NFC and In-Seat Mobile Ordering at Super Bowl 50
Visa will use Sunday’s Super Bowl 50 to promote contactless payments and mobile purchases that fans can make from their seats. The payments network, an NFL sponsor for more than 20 years, will use this year’s contest in the San Francisco area to test and boost two main payments efforts.
First, Visa says it has “retrofitted” POS terminals in Levi’s Stadium, site of the big game, to accept NFC payments. Consumers can buy hot dogs, soda and souvenirs by waving their NFC-enabled mobile phones in front of the terminals. In related news, Ingenico Group says the stadium has deployed 500 Ingenico terminals running FreedomPay software. The game is expected to draw some 75,000 fans to the stadium.
Not all those fans will want to leave their seats during play. That’s one of the ideas behind the second Visa Super Bowl payments initiative. Fans at the stadium who download the Super Bowl 50 app can order concessions via the app for delivery to their seats. The purchasing tool uses Visa Checkout, the payment network’s online and mobile wallet technology. Consumers check out using their user names and passwords, a process that takes no more than five seconds, says Sam Shrauger, Visa’s senior vice president of digital solutions.
Visa also will demonstrate at the NFL Shop and NFL Experience how to use Samsung Pay for purchases. Samsung Pay recently expanded its roster of supported payment cards with the addition of eight new card issuers. Visa will pay participating fans $5 toward purchase, with fans who link their Visa cards to Samsung Pay, or prove they have Visa loaded in their phones, receiving $10.
