Green Dot, Uber Partnership Goes Nationwide
Ride-hailing service Uber has expanded a pilot partnership with Green Dot to all markets in which Uber operates in the U.S. The companies’ Instant Pay service enables Uber drivers to get paid as often as they want through Green Dot’s Pay Award-wining GoBank mobile checking account, via a special GoBank Uber debit card.
Announced in March, Instant Pay initially was piloted in a few markets, including San Francisco, and the feature “has been a big hit with drivers,” Uber noted in a blog post announcing the nationwide rollout of Instant Pay. Drivers can apply for a GoBank card within the Uber driver app or online.
The Uber partnership was part of an active 2016 thus far for Green Dot, whose CEO, Steve Streit, emerged relatively unscathed from a contentious proxy battle with shareholder Harvest Capital. Streit retained his board seat at the company’s annual shareholders’ meeting last month, but two other board members resigned and were replaced by Harvest nominees. Amid the dust-up, Green Dot continued to grow its business, re-launching its popular MoneyPak reload product, expanding its retail distribution network and seeing its first increase in active prepaid cards in more than a year in the first quarter of 2016.
