Cisco and IBM team up to tackle cybercrime
Cisco and IBM Security have joined forces for products, services and threat intelligence as they seek to improve their market share and combat cybercrime.
Cisco will integrate its security solutions with IBM’s QRadar for network, endpoint and cloud protection. IBM says this also establishes a new relationship between its IBM X-Force and Cisco Talos security research teams, who will begin working together on threat intelligence research and co-ordinating on cybersecurity incidents.
Marc van Zadelhoff, general manager, IBM Security, says: “With Cisco joining our immune system of defence, joint customers will greatly expand their ability to enhance their use of cognitive technologies like IBM Watson for Cyber Security.”
IBM says the cost of data breaches to enterprises continues to rise. It cites the Ponemon Institute, which found in 2016 for companies surveyed the cost was at its highest ever at $4 million – up 29% over the past three years. IBM believes cybercrime is expected to cost the world $6 trillion annually by 2021.
In fact, just yesterday (30 May), IBM Security launched fintech programmes and partnerships to overcome the projected 1.8 million-person cybersecurity worker shortage and boost its market share.
As part of the collaboration, Cisco will build new applications for IBM’s QRadar security analytics platform. The first two new applications will be designed to help security teams understand and respond to advanced threats and will be available on the IBM Security App Exchange.
IBM’s Resilient Incident Response Platform (IRP) will integrate with Cisco’s Threat Grid to provide security teams with insights. For example, analysts in the IRP can look up indicators of compromise with Cisco Threat Grid’s threat intelligence, or detonate suspected malware with its sandbox technology.
In addition, IBM’s Managed Security Services team will work with Cisco to deliver new services. One of the first offerings is designed for the growing hybrid cloud market. IBM says as enterprise customers migrate security infrastructure to public and private cloud providers, it will provide managed security services in support of Cisco security platforms.
