Treasury’s Walt Henderson Wins Terrence P. Maher Award
The NBPCA’s Power of Prepaid Conference kicked off in Washington, D.C., on June 22, with discussion of the prepaid industry’s most pressing challenge, regulatory uncertainty. One of the highlights of the morning sessions, however, was the presentation of the third annual Terrence P. Maher Prepaid Influencer Award to Walt Henderson, director of EFT strategy division at the U.S. Department of Treasury. Henderson has managed the Treasury’s benefits disbursement prepaid program from its inception, overseeing substantial growth and consistently high customer satisfaction.
“Through his leadership of the EFT Strategy division of the Fiscal Service, Walt Henderson has demonstrated the key qualities of balance and collaboration for the common good,” said Nora T. Arpin, senior vice president and director, government electronic solutions at Comerica Bank. “Beyond his contributions to the success of the largest government prepaid program, Direct Express, Walt’s articulate explanation and advocacy have benefitted the entire prepaid industry.”
As part of his work with Direct Express, Henderson also oversaw one of the largest financial education program rollouts in partnership with Mastercard, Comerica and PayPerks. As a “tireless champion” of electronic payments, Henderson has demonstrated that prepaid can provide valuable financial services to underserved populations, noted NBPCA President and CEO Brian Tate.
Created in honor of Terry Maher, who served as counsel to the NBPCA for several years until he passed away in 2014, the award is sponsored by Baird Holm LLP, the law firm where Maher was a partner. Maher was an active member of the prepaid industry, serving as counsel to the NBPCA and partner with law firm Baird Holm LLP. The award recognizes one individual for dedication and passion in driving the prepaid industry forward.
