Absa launches mobile account opening
South Africa’s Absa Goup has launched new functionality in its mobile app for new customers, New to Bank.
“Unlike our competitors – your bank account is live immediately – no need to go to a branch,” states Jacques Barkhuizen, Absa’s CIO of digital/virtual channels, in a LinkedIn post.
Users are required to provide their ID number, and “we’ll do the rest”, he says. “The way it should be.”
The current/cheque account can be opened in five minutes on the bank’s mobile app and “is activated immediately, ready to transact”, Barkhuizen promises. “No more branch activation!”
Earlier this year, the banking group went through a major rebrand, unifying its operations across 12 African countries under the new Absa brand. It is also eyeing the UK and the US for international offices.
“There is a way of doing things that’s unique to our continent,” Absa says. “Of meeting every challenge with tenacity, ingenuity, positivity and creativity. At Absa, we call it Aficanacity: the distinctly African ability to always find ways to get things done.”
