Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Bank to unveil 600 cardless ATMs
Hang Seng Bank, one of Hong Kong’s main public companies and part of HSBC Group, is set to unveil 600 new ATMs this month across the country which just need a mobile phone to withdraw money.
Powered by near field communication (NFC) connections – i.e. contactless technology, and QR codes, the ATMs will offer customers a choice of how they access their money.
“We are excited about introducing NFC technology into our customers’ banking experience, offering them even greater choice and convenience,” says retail banking and wealth management head Margaret Kwan.
All the machines will support QR code cash withdrawals, and more than half will support both QR code and NFC cash withdrawals. The bank says it will connect all 600 ATMs to NFC services in the first half of 2020.
Across all ATMs, the daily limit of HKD 10,000 ($1,277.39) is the same as it would be using a debit or credit card.
Customers will also receive SMS and e-mail notifications after completing a cash withdrawal with their mobile.
