ICICI Bank launches WhatsApp-based banking service
India-based ICICI Bank has launched a new set of banking services on WhatsApp, allowing its customers to check their balance and transactions via the social platform.
The bank has launched the new services on the back of it rolling out a suite of digital banking systems and application programming interfaces (APIs).
Using the service on WhatsApp, retail customers can check their savings account balance, last three transactions, credit card limit, get details of pre-approved instant loan offers and block cards.
The service is also able to detail the location of the nearest three ICICI Bank ATMs.
“It has always been our endeavor to offer improved convenience to our customers,” says Anup Bagchi, executive director, ICICI Bank.
“Our retail customers can execute a host of their banking requirements on their own, without visiting a branch. The services are instantaneous and secure.”
Any ICICI Bank savings account customer who is also on WhatsApp can access the new service.
Earlier this year WhatsApp was given permission to roll out its WhatsApp Pay service across India.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) gave the Facebook-owned platform permission to go live with its service to an initial 10 million users.
India is WhatsApp’s biggest market, with more than 400 million users. The messaging platform trialled a payments service in partnership with HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank in February 2018.
Its system is based on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), a real-time payment system developed by the NPCI and debuted in April 2016.
