FinTech Futures Jobs: eight tips for landing a job in a new city
There is nothing more exciting than making the decision to relocate to a new city. The world is filled with incredible places, so why not get out there and see them? Whether it’s a long-term move, or just a brief desire to experience new cultures, there are a lot of things to consider.
One of the most important things to sort out when moving? Well, getting a job in your new city, of course! It can be a challenge to figure out the best strategy for finding a new position in a new place. FinTech Futures Jobs is here to help you as best we can, with some great tips on how exactly to go about landing a dream job in a new city (and do check out our job portal for all available vacancies):
1. Contacts
You know what they say… it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. When moving somewhere new, consider the people and contacts you could potentially reach out to upon arrival. They may be a great source of job leads, interview tips and advice for navigating this new life of yours.
2. Location
Have you given much thought into your destination of choice? What is your chosen industry like in the city of your dreams? Will there be jobs available to you? Make sure you align your city of choice with your career aspirations, so as to avoid disappointment.
3. CV specifics
When you start applying for jobs, make sure to look into CV specifications for the region. Different parts of the world have different standards when it comes to CVs. Make sure to educate yourself on the most common CV practices in the place you’re moving to.
4. Networking
As soon as you’re settled in your new home, start networking. Join professional bodies within your industry, attend (digital) mixers and events, and start conversations with the people you meet. You never know who may be able to help you down the line.
5. Use social
Social media will become one of your greatest assets when hunting for a new role in a new place. Be sure to update your LinkedIn, and connect with people who you may know. Also consider asking former employers and colleagues to write recommendations on your page – these will really stand to you.
6. Research
Unfortunately, it won’t be as easy as packing a bag and booking a flight. A lot of planning and research goes into moving abroad. Look into things like visa requirements, the cost of living, the rental market. You should also keep an eye on the COVID-19 situation in your new city, and be mindful of any restrictions that may be in place.
7. Interview prep
And you’ve done it – you’ve landed an interview. This can be a difficult one, especially if you haven’t actually moved just yet. Make sure you can get to your new city at reasonably short notice, so that you have the chance to interview. Alternatively, see if the places you are interested in working for would be willing to enable a remote job interview. Given the goings on over the last few months, this more than likely won’t be an issue.
8. Save
Remember, more than likely you won’t get a job overnight, so it’s best to have some money saved for the move. Be sure to have yourself covered until your first paycheck comes through!
Most of all, good luck – and enjoy every second of it.
