FinTech Futures Jobs: five ways to stay positive while searching for your dream job
Let’s face it, job hunting is never an easy task. You could very easily spend hours and hours trawling through the internet searching and applying, sometimes getting nowhere. It can be pretty disheartening, trust me, I know all too well.
And needless to say, the outbreak of a global pandemic certainly hasn’t made the job search any easier. However, as the world slowly (emphasis on slow) starts to “reopen for business”, there are more and more jobs available to those who are looking. Which is great news.
While the process can feel daunting, exhausting and stressful – the end result of landing your dream job is always worth it! And folks, positivity is the key to making the most out of applications, interviews and new roles. Where there’s a will, there’s a way!
Here are some of my tips to staying positive while looking for a new job:
- Practice
They say the phrase “practice makes perfect”, and they mean it! A lot of the stress surrounding the job hunt comes from a lack of confidence. And that’s perfectly normal, honestly! However, the best way to decrease your stress levels is to boost that confidence. How can you do that? Practice, practice, practice.
If you can, practice on your cover letter and personal statement writing skills before sending off an official one. Also, if (and when) you get called for an interview, try practicing with someone you know beforehand. Particularly if it is your first time doing an interview remotely – even Zoom your housemate from the kitchen if needs be.
- Remember how great you are
Nothing wrong with tooting your own horn now and then, is there? I know how hard it is to stay positive while looking for a job, especially when you’re reading job descriptions, required skills, education etc. It’s crazy that we, as humans, instantly tend to focus on what we don’t have in terms of these requirements. Well, what about what you do have?
If you start to feel a bit down while trawling through applications, make a lovely list of all your incredible achievements (no matter how big or small they may seem). Re-read these every time you start to question yourself!
- Be realistic
We’re all dreamers, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But be careful with those dreams. When applying for jobs, it can be easy to lose the run of reality sometimes. I have found over the years that I will one minute be applying for CEO roles (aim high, right?) and the next minute I will be applying for an internship position (neither being close to my actual experience level).
When searching for a job, be sure to manage your own expectations, and make yourself aware of your realistic goals. This could mean identifying a management level for yourself, or a salary expectation. You don’t want to set the bar too high or too low. Once you know what you realistically deserve from a job, it will make the process of looking and applying far easier.
- Routine
Trying to find a new job is a lot of work, and takes time. If you are searching for a role at the moment, be sure to lay out your days with as much routine as possible. Have your breakfast, identify the hours you wish to spend searching and applying.
One major piece of advice: do not be awake at all hours of the night scrolling through jobs on the internet. Your applications won’t be as amazing as they should be at 3am. I guarantee it.
- Take time off
This might just be the most important thing for anyone who is looking for a new job! It can be overwhelming, it is exhausting, and sometimes you probably want to take your laptop and fling it out the window. Been there. However, if you do find yourself getting stressed out, take a break, and do something that makes you happy. Go for a walk, watch an episode of your favourite show, or if all else fails, crack open a bottle of something.
