Chat commerce platform Clickatell raises $91m Series C to boost expansion plans
California-based chat commerce platform Clickatell has landed a $91 million Series C round.
The round was led by Arrowroot Capital and saw participation from Kennedy Lewis Investment Management, Sequoia Capital, DAG Ventures, Endeavor Global and Harvest.
The Communications Platform as a Service (CPaaS) provider will use the cash to develop its chat commerce offering, expand its US footprint and scale its sales and marketing efforts.
The company, which also has offices in Canada, South Africa and Nigeria, adds the new capital will also go towards building out its engineering team. It has already earmarked over 200 positions with a strong focus on boosting its teams in Africa.
Clickatell co-founder and CEO Pieter de Villiers says: “While expansion in the US is a high priority in this capital raise, Africa will remain a core market for us and one where our purpose of creating a better world for all through technology really shines through.
“Africa has a wealth of talent and Clickatell will continue to work with both the public and private sectors to ensure that the potential, both of individuals and companies, can be realised.”
Clickatell’s low/no-code platform allows brands to converse and transact with customers online, which the company says drives engagement and increases transactional volume.
Clickatell claims to have processed more than 30 billion interactions and 2 billion commerce transactions during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns.
