FinTech Futures Jobs: This is how to job search in 2023
It has been an interesting year to be an employee at a tech company.
2022 will be remembered for its slowing global economy, the onset of war in Ukraine, inflation rates that are higher than we have seen in several decades and escalating prices.
Many tech firms’ forecasts faltered in the face of these setbacks and from the spring, we began to see layoffs across the wider industry. Add in a tight labour market where employees can flex their muscles to boost pay and benefits and demand the right to work a schedule that suits them, and we have seen some knee-jerk reactions from founders and CEOs in response.
With all this in mind, we wouldn’t be surprised if you were thinking about looking for a new job in 2023. But given that the sands have and continue to shift within the tech industry, what do you need to know about getting hired next year?
Look at growth industries
While it is true that some tech companies contracted this year, it is equally true that there are growth opportunities available. Look particularly in the cloud, cybersecurity, data science, artificial intelligence and machine learning sectors for jobs in 2023. And they aren’t all necessarily technical: plenty of companies in these spaces are hiring for marketing, sales and finance roles too.
Prepare for remote hiring
It’s likely that any job application process you go through in 2023 will have some element conducted remotely. So, sharpen your video call game: check your WiFi upload speeds, get your lighting on point, prepare a clear background and use this to your advantage. You could also pepper the sides of your screen with helpful sticky notes filled with case studies and KPIs you’ve smashed so you have all the information to hand when on a call with your boss.
Be aware of ghost jobs
This is an annoying phenomenon that can happen for a number of reasons, but the net effect is the same: the job is not really a job at all. Some tech companies under hiring freezes simply haven’t removed job advertisements. Other firms leave listings in place as they don’t want it to appear to the competition that they aren’t hiring, and yet more companies leave up speculative job posts to help them create a pipeline of talent. One way to spot a ghost ad is to check the date it was posted. If it is more than 60 days old, it may well be invalid.
Know your work style
Before you submit your CV, figure out what way you want to work this next job. Plenty of companies are offering hybrid work, with a set number of days per week in the office and some at home. But does that actually suit you, or would you prefer to work fully remote? Better yet is true flexibility, where you decide how, where and when you get the job done.
