Starling Bank to create 1,000 jobs as it opens new Manchester base
British challenger Starling Bank is set to create up to 1,000 new jobs in Manchester, where it is opening its fourth UK office.
As the fintech world navigates times of uncertainty and layoffs, Starling Bank remains one of the few firms openly recruiting. The challenger says it is hiring for roles in operations, software engineering, data science, cyber security and customer service.
Starling’s new office will open in the first half of 2023 to support its next phase of growth, as it joins four other offices in London, Cardiff, Southampton and Dublin, which currently employ more than 2,000 people.
The bank says it chose Manchester for its new base due to its “deep pool of tech talent and rich cultural and creative heritage”.
“The city, which has been named the UK’s Top Digital Tech City, benefits from a £5 billion digital ecosystem and access to stand-out graduates from three top universities,” the challenger says.
“The region is home to some of the UK’s fastest growing start-ups and tech giants, with five tech unicorns based in the north-west and six more pending.”
The neobank became profitable for the first time this year, and also opened up a new office in London just a few weeks ago, increasing its headcount by 20% since the beginning of 2022.
Commenting on its new base in Manchester, Starling Bank founder and CEO Anne Boden says: “As the world’s first industrial city, with three brilliant universities on its doorstep and a thriving technology scene, there was never any doubt that Manchester would house our first step into the North.”
