European paytech Viva Wallet names Dimitris Mavroyiannis as group COO
European paytech Viva Wallet has appointed Dimitris Mavroyiannis as its new group chief operating officer (COO).
In his new role, Mavroyiannis will work to bolster the company’s presence across the 24 European countries in which it currently operates and contribute to shaping the overall business strategy of the firm.
Mavroyiannis joins from Greece’s Piraeus Bank, where he led the operations and technology arms of the business.
Viva Wallet co-founder and senior vice president for technology and operations Makis Antipas says Mavroyiannis’ “extensive international experience, and deep knowledge of payments and banking technology” will “catalyse” the business.
“We feel that we are at the beginning of a new growth cycle for our organisation. We will work closely together to realise Viva’s pan-European vision,” Antipas notes.
Mavroyiannis has a background in digital transformation, neobanking, e-commerce and cybersecurity that stretches back to 2000.
He previously helped set up the first digital bank in the Middle East, CBD Now, in his role as chief information officer (CIO) at the Commercial Bank of Dubai.
He has also served as chief technology officer (CTO) at Commercial Bank of Qatar and group CIO and general manager at Eurobank.
Speaking on his new role, Mavroyiannis says his goal is to strengthen Viva Wallet’s governance framework and model it around the firm’s international presence.
Last year, US banking giant JP Morgan acquired a 49% ownership stake in Viva Wallet.
