Sixteen Australian payment service providers have added MasterCard’s MasterPass as a payment option for their electronic merchant clients. Announced at the Online Retailers and E-Commerce Expo in Sydney, the agreements brings MasterPass to thousands of online merchants, who will add a MasterPass button to their online checkout, enabling shoppers to make purchases with a single click using stored payment information.
MasterCard brought MasterPass to Australia in March, and the payment network said it expects a rapid takeup by processors and merchants. “Having so many technology partners onboard illustrates the increasing consumer demand for digital wallets,” said MasterCard’s Matt Barr, head of market development and innovation, Australasia. “We expect that these technology partners are the first wave of many to come onboard.” The newly signed processors cover a range of sectors, including general retail, hospitality, electronics fashion and corporate payments.
MasterCard has been aggressively expanding MasterPass since unveiling the platform in February. MasterPass debuted in Canada in April, followed by the U.S. soon after and the U.K. earlier this month. Future expansion plans include entry into markets in Europe, Asia and the Middle East later this year and into 2014.
