MasterCard is joining with mobile payment technology provider C-SAM and mobile wallet service provider DNP to bring a white-label NFC-based mobile wallet service to Japan. The service will integrate MasterCard’s PayPass Wallet Services contactless payment technology with C-SAM’s mobile transaction platform and DNP’s mobile wallet services, enabling merchants to offer their customers “convenient, contactless transaction and value-added services via their smartphones.” Along with making contactless payments, consumers can use the wallet to manage loyalty cards and coupons, while retailers can offer specially tailored discounts and deals based on a user’s shopping history.
MasterCard and Chicago-based C-SAM previously partnered on a mobile wallet launched in August 2012 in Singapore. That release was part of a joint initiative between the companies to offer mobile wallets in Africa, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. The companies further solidified their relationship in December 2012, when MasterCard acquired a stake in C-SAM. At the time, the payment network said C-SAM would provide back-end infrastructure, software development kits and on-device software to support MasterCard’s various wallet-based NFC initiatives, as well as barcode, QR code and cloud-based transactions.
