Amex Debuts New Travel Card in Sri Lanka (Sept. 30, 2013)
American Express is partnering with Sri Lanka’s Sampath Bank to launch a new prepaid travel card aimed at the growing number of Sri Lankans traveling abroad for business, education or leisure. The new Travel Life Prepaid Card, American Express’ first prepaid travel card in Sri Lanka, enables travelers to lock in a particular currency exchange rate. Currently available in U.S. dollars, the reloadable card is accepted at millions of retailers that accept American Express and at more than 550,000 ATMs worldwide. Cardholders receive SMS alerts whenever a transaction is made with the card to help monitor spending. Additional features include optional travel insurance through Allianz Global Assistance, a free backup card, free card replacement and special offers for travel, dining, shopping and other activities through American Express Selects. The card is available at all 210 Sampath Bank locations in Sri Lanka.
American Express won a 2013 Paybefore Award for its Global Travel Card, which provides payment capability and travel benefits to cardholders in Australia, Brazil, India, South Africa and the U.S. The company has cited travelers from high-growth and emerging markets as a key customer segment as it continues to use prepaid cards to expand the reach of its platform and services.
