U.K. Legislation Opens Door for Mobile Deposit Capture (June 26, 2014)
A convenience that’s been catching on in the U.S.—depositing a check by taking a picture of it with a smartphone—is coming to the U.K., according to reports. The government there has introduced The Small Business, Enterprise and Employment Bill, which enables banks to process check images without the physical paper and gives consumers the option to deposit checks to their banks using the camera on their mobile devices. Paybefore Award winner Barclays announced its plans to offer the service late last year, and it’s credited with being the first bank in the U.K. to pilot the mobile check imaging technology.
