PayPal Launches Smartwatch App, Expands Fingerprint Authentication (June 30, 2014)
PayPal’s bid for payments ubiquity continues. The company has unveiled a pair of initiatives that incorporate wearable and biometric technology, launching a new app for the Android Wear line of smartwatches and expanding its fingerprint authentication to the Samsung Galaxy tablet.
The Android Wear app, available for now only to PayPal’s beta testers, enables users to check-in and make PayPal payments at stores, redeem offers and receive payment notifications using the smartwatch—in some cases using only a voice command.
Meanwhile, the company is expanding the fingerprint authentication app it announced in February for the Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone, bringing the app to the Galaxy Tab S. Like the smartphone version, the tablet service enables users to make payments at any online or brick-and-mortar merchant that accepts PayPal, with no password or login required. Users simply swipe their fingers on the handset to connect to PayPal’s secure cloud-based wallet.
