New App Option a Clue to Twitter e-Commerce Plans? (Aug. 11, 2014)
Rumors of Twitter’s imminent entry into e-commerce got more fuel last week, when some users of the company’s Android app noticed a new “Payment & Shipping” option. The option currently is inactive, but its addition to the app’s settings menu sparked renewed speculation about Twitter’s plans to enter e-commerce, where it could monetize its huge user base and mobile penetration.
While Twitter thus far has been mum about a full-fledged e-commerce play, the company has offered up its platform to help retailers drive sales. In May, Twitter struck a deal with Amazon to enable users to add items to their Amazon shopping carts directly from Twitter feeds via a special hashtag. And last month, Twitter acquired CardSpring, an application platform that could enable merchants to offer card-linked offers via Tweets.
