Google Wallet Pact Is Blackhawk’s Latest Mobile Move (Sept. 4, 2014)
Blackhawk Network has integrated its gifting platform with Google Wallet, enabling wallet users to manage and spend gift cards on their mobile devices. Users can save digital gift cards directly to Google Wallet and add physical cards by taking pictures of the cards using their phones’ cameras or manually entering the cards’ numbers and PINs. Consumers can redeem saved cards in-store by showing their phone to a cashier. Users also can check their balances in real time and receive reminders to use their gift cards when they’re near stores.
The Google Wallet integration marks Blackhawk’s latest move in the mobile wallet space. Last month, Blackhawk partnered with Barclays Bank to launch an e-gifting feature for the bank’s Pingit mobile banking service. In July, the company announced a similar partnership with Amazon for the Amazon Wallet app. And in March, Blackhawk opened its platform to suretap, the mobile wallet app from Canadian telecom operator Rogers Communication.
