Home Depot Confirms Breach Spans Stores in U.S., Canada (Sept. 9, 2014)
Home Depot confirmed suspicions that it is the victim of a customer data breach. The breach could impact customers who used payment cards at stores in the U.S. and Canada since last April. Home Depot said yesterday it has no evidence that consumers shopping at HomeDepot.com or in its Mexico locations have been affected. The company is still investigating the full scope of the breach, but officials say there’s no evidence that debit PINs were compromised. The New York Times is reporting that as many as 60 million card numbers might have been compromised, which would eclipse the 40 million affected by Target’s data breach.
Home Depot said its investigation began Tuesday morning, Sept. 2, immediately after the company received reports from its banking partners and law enforcement that criminals might have hacked its payment data systems. Since then, the company’s internal IT security team has been working with IT security firms, its banking partners and the U.S. Secret Service to gather facts and provide information to customers. Home Depot is offering free identity protection services, including credit monitoring, to customers who used a payment card at Home Depot stores since April of this year.
