Boku Provides Leading MNOs with Direct Carrier Billing in U.K.

A trio of major U.K. mobile network operators—including O2, EE and Vodafone—has partnered with carrier billing specialist Boku Inc. to enable mobile phone customers in the U.K. to charge the purchase of physical goods and services up to £30 (US$48) to their phone bills. The arrangement relies on Boku’s e-money license, obtained in early 2013, which enables the company to operate outside of the EU’s Payment Services Directive (PSD), which restricts direct carrier billing to purchasing after-market digital content for phones, such as ringtones and background wallpapers. Launch partners include Corethree, a mobile ticketing provider that works with several British bus companies, along with magazine publisher IPC Media. Boku reportedly is in talks with other retailers in the U.K. and mobile operators in France and Germany to expand the service in Europe.
