Dunkin’ Donuts to Add Order-Ahead Service (Oct. 7, 2014)
Dunkin’ Donuts plans to launch a new service that enables customers to order ahead and prepay for menu items via their smartphones, then visit a store location to pick up their orders. The Canton, Mass.-based chain unveiled the service during a recent presentation to investors and said it will begin testing the “click-and-collect” technology during the fourth quarter of this year before adding the service to its existing mobile app in 2015. The move by Dunkin’ comes in the wake of similar initiatives by other restaurant chains, including Applebee’s, SUBWAY and Taco Bell, aimed at offering customers a more accurate and efficient ordering experience. Dunkin’ Donuts already has carved out a significant foothold in mobile, with the company’s payment and loyalty app having been downloaded more than 8.6 million times since its 2012 debut.
