Amex, Brooklyn Nets Testing M-Payments at Basketball Games (Nov. 10, 2014)
Brooklyn Nets basketball fans can use their smartphones to purchase refreshments at the Barclays Center as part of a pilot program for the Brooklyn eWallet by American Express, the Barclays Center and the Nets. The Brooklyn eWallet is a digital payment solution built on the American Express Serve platform and integrated into the Brooklyn Nets mobile app. The free app is available for download for iPhone and Android platforms.
Users add funding sources with the “card snap” capability, which scans plastic credit, charge, debit or prepaid cards, and up to 10 payment cards from any issuer can be stored in the e-wallet. To pay, consumers tap “Make a Purchase” in the app to open the QR code scanner and then scan the QR code generated by the merchant. The Brooklyn eWallet only can be used within the Barclays Center at 26 food and drink concession stands equipped with a tablet at each POS that generates a QR code, according to an American Express spokesperson. “We’re seeing a lot of excitement in the payments space with the wallet-as-a-service category growing as merchants seek apps as ways that help improve their customer’s experience and provide greater value,” she tells Paybefore.
