Toronto, Jakarta Transit Payment Systems Going Electronic (Dec. 18, 2014)
Transit systems throughout the world continue to adopt electronic payment systems—the latest among them Toronto and Indonesian province Jakarta.
Toronto commuters in January will be able to use their debit and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and American Express) on the subway instead of tokens and tickets. The Toronto Transit Commission said it’s also considering accepting contactless payments cards later in 2015, and eventually emulating London’s Oyster contactless payments system across its transportation network, according to reports.
Wirecard and its Indonesian subsidiary PT Prima Vista Solusi are supporting TransJakarta Busway, a public utility board, with an electronic ticketing system, including new POS terminals. Bus passengers can pay for tickets using prepaid contactless cards or their NFC-enabled mobile phones. Wirecard provides the payment infrastructure, services and integration to the participating financial institutions. The bus system has 177 stations and services 6 million passengers a month.
