PayPal Collaborating with Microsoft for EMV Card Acceptance via Tablets and Phones (Jan. 15, 2015)
PayPal this week announced a partnership with Microsoft to provide a new POS approach for small businesses to accept cards payments using the computer titan’s Surface Pro 3 tablet and certain Windows-based phones. A new PayPal Here EMV-compatible card reader and associated app, both in development for the U.S., will use the new PayPal Here software development kit launching later this month, Brad Brodigan, PayPal vice president and general manager of retail, wrote in a blog post.
The partnership means merchants currently relying on a tablet and a laptop to accept card payments will be able to consolidate those operations within a single device, PayPal said. The PayPal Here app and EMV card reader currently distributed in the U.K. and Australia have sharply reduced card fraud in those markets, and later this year the same combination of features will be available for U.S.-based small businesses using iOS, Android and Windows hardware at the POS, Brodigan wrote.
