Visa Checkout to Reach 16 Countries This Year (Feb. 23, 2015)
Visa is expanding Visa Checkout, its secure online payment service, to reach a total of 16 countries this year, the company said last week. Visa Checkout launched during 2014 in the U.S., Canada and Australia. By the end of this year, the service will be available in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Hong Kong, Peru, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and United Arab Emirates. Consumers in the newly enabled markets who sign up for the service initially will be able to make purchases from merchants in the U.S., Australia and Canada that accept Visa Checkout and ship internationally, Visa said. As Visa Checkout rolls out, the service will support local merchants, and Visa will launch localized Visa Checkout Websites in many of the new markets. Visa Checkout replaces the payments network’s V.me digital wallet in most markets.
More than 3 million consumers have signed up for Visa Checkout, which simplifies the payment process at participating Websites by enabling users to store their payment and shipping details securely in the cloud, according to Visa. At checkout, customers enter only a user name and password. Visa said earlier this month that it’s expanding the use of its Visa Token Service, introduced in September 2014, to make online and mobile payments more secure, and noted it also plans to tokenize transactions initiated online with Visa Checkout.
MasterCard’s MasterPass, PayPal and Pay with Amazon also provide streamlined online checkout services for consumers in many markets.
